An exuberance of walls...(cont.)

The rest of the wall box painted up.  There wasn't enough bits and content to really make two gated yards as I wanted, so I went with some corner walls to match generously with the other straight wall sections.

 

This year has been awfully slow with painted miniatures, a scant 110 thus far.  My yearly goal is always 120 (10 per month), so that's fine, but I won't be reaching the heady heights of the past few years where I've done 400-500.

 

However, I have added/painted a lot of terrain so I consider that a huge win, and I'm making genuine progress on actually writing the games and getting FSF to production. 

An excitement of walls...

I have formally decided that the collective noun for multiple walls is ...an 'excitement'.

 

I picked up the plastic 'stone wall' kit from Warlord Games.  It's a nice kit, and comes with - as they say - 54" of wall.  These four long stretches were too big to put on a solo base, so I kept them single, so they can line a road, etc.  The remaining bits will be done up as some walled gardens or some such.

 

 

Overall, nice and decent kit for around $25 USD.  Not mind-blowing, but very servicable.  I added the bases and the chopped up wagon wheels, obviously.

A long underwhelming project...finally complete.

Many moons ago I started collecting bits of a Renedra 'castle'.  Castle is less accurate, as they never finished a bunch of other components (you can tell from the instructions and boxes that they had plans for more than "two" pieces).  It makes more of a city wall than a castle, though you can put them together to make a small castle if desired.

I finally acquired enough to tackle it.  I took three of the four towers and removed the third story (it makes them unwieldy and unnecessarily large in my opinion).  I made one of the towers into a gatehouse and used the last tower as a simple keep.

The kits are mediocre - the destroyed wall section (not pictured) is so bad, I may not fix it and bother adding it to the collection.

For Renedra, a popular plastics company - the quality is shockingly poor.  Loads of flash, and the walls are so thin in places that there are holes you need to patch with sprue-goo or something similar.  Many of the edges are thin and need reinforcing as they're likely to snap if hit, etc.

All of the components require immense cleaning, tons of flash, some erupted gates that spilled onto the sprues, and even some blown out sections of the molds where "drops" of plastic are present and need removing.  The arrow slits are mostly in need of cleaning.

The kits are not very modular --- and they could have been.  A little work and you could have really built all kinds of stuff out of them.  I have a bunch of spare walls from the removed tower floors that I'll use to build another building or something.

As a set of kits, I'd rate it ...6/10 at best.  However, there are only two big plastic castles on the market and I think the texture of these is superior to the Tabletop Workshop kits --- though those have more variety and seem better designed.

 

Some 15mm walls from Flames of War (for Battlegroup)

The other day my local game store got a stash of old Flames of War boxes (and a bunch of old metal minis in appaling condition).  I snagged the box of old Gale Force 9 'Battlefield in a Box' walls.

 

As with most of the Gale Force 9 stuff it's pretty lifeless out of the box - despite being 'pre-painted' they often need some touching up to really blend with anything.  They feel very...stale?

 

So I slapped them down on some bases, slapped on a few washes/filters and then did the full basing routine.  I shaped them to kind of "clip on" to random buildings as a rear yard.

 Had a few requests to see the town "assembled" so here is a quick table I knocked out.

I was able to sneak an order in with Mark over at Crescent Root Studios.  I'd been hemming/hawing over what to do about terrain and simply decided to go all-in and order a whole town.  It showed up today in great shape!  Everything seems intact, and I'm very pleased.

 

 

More AoS sprue-doodles...

 Two of the other sprues I picked up in the small eBay lot were from one of the Warcry kits (pretty sure?).  I knocked them up into a few decent ruins.  I'll just have to ignore the sigmarines carved into each column.

 

 

AoS Terrain Sprues?

A week ago, I picked up a random smattering of terrain sprues from Age of Sigmar and...I think(?) Warcry.  These were on eBay for a "reasonable" price, and I snagged them in the hopes of bashing them into something useful.

 

This is the first two sprues.  I de-AoS'ed them significantly (leaving the Griff Hound statues off, showing them as destroyed instead, covering up AoS emblems with gravel, etc.).

 

I have four more different sprues remaining, and think I can make some decent terrain bits out of them.

 

 

Some trivial terrain tasks...

While ordering some Battlefield in a Box buildings for use with Merciless and FSF, I picked up one more set of smaller rocks to accompany my existing rock fields and little outcroppings, etc.  Fortunately I kinda/sorta figured out how to match them to my older stuff.

Nothing too excited, and yes I'm painting...pre-painted stuff, because pre-painted is never pre-painted enough. (more rhymes will come with the times...)

Scrappen-Heapen Tables.

Some pictures of various tables I've built for Scrapheap lately.  Hoping that Scrapheap will actually be ready for launch in the next couple of weeks.  A few more test orders to arrive and a little bit more editing/reviewing.

More walls...this time in stone.

As I sat down at the hobby desk yesterday to pick something to build/paint...I remembered I had to finish off this other set of resin 15mm walls.  Instead of brick these were stone.

I ordered some stone and brick walls from Monday Night Gaming(?) via eBay.  Unfortunately, upon arrival they were exactly what I expected - poorly sculpted and cast components.  The type you'd get for $5 at a convention off a rack.  Very late-90's feeling stuff.

I spent way too much time cutting off flash, excess resin, leveling the bottoms, etc.  However, the end result of at least one set is acceptable for gaming.  Just too much work needed to make them look decent.

 

 

Leftover Tamiya Barrels can mean only one thing!

I whipped up one more 'barge' for my 'port' while I had all the bits out.  I used up the rest of my Tamiya barrels (used as the floats), and a bunch more plasticard and coffee stirrers.

This one came out slightly larger than the other one, but they are distinctive enough while looking like they exist in the same world.

Scrapheap river barge - not in 15mm?

Despite blasting out a bunch of 15mm kits the past few days I decided to pull a 90-degree turn back into Scrapheap...with more terrain.  One of the locations requires a river barge which docks during the game (with loot on board).  For over a year I've put off building a river barge.

 

I changed that yesterday/today.
